The History of Home Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, NC

We believe that personal service is a part of the responsibility of every Christian.  Our challenge is to feed the hungry, heal the sick, clothe the naked, teach the gospel, and witness to the faith.  Outlined below are opportunities within our community supported by Home Church and needing your participation.  For information concerning how you might participate in these or other service opportunities, please contact the church office at 722-6171.

Supported Ministries and Agencies

Crisis Control Ministry – Home Church is a significant supporter of this ministry both with volunteers and financially. This ministry, along with Sunnyside Ministry, serves the truly disadvantaged in the community with counseling, clothing, food and medications. Many Home Church members and staff volunteer with Crisis Control Ministry. Continued support at the level requested is due to the significant need brought upon the community due to the economic climate and reduced state and federal funding.
          
Senior Services – Home Church has many volunteers with Meals on Wheels, a program of Senior Services. Senior Services provides critical services to the frail elderly in Forsyth County including home delivered meals, in home care, Alzheimer’s Day Center and more. Funding is designated for Meals on Wheels.
                      
Hospice – Home Church members have benefited significantly from the supportive palliative care of Hospice workers and volunteers.  Hospice provides services to individuals and families.
                                
Habitat for Humanity  - Home Church members have been instrumental in the development, management and direction of Habitat. We have directly been involved with over seven houses and completed a home in 2006.
    
Food Bank of NW NC – The Food Bank provides donated food items at a reduced cost to numerous non-profit, church and other organizations in the community. Thousands of people benefit annually from the work of the Food Bank.
            
Trinity Center  - Home Church has been linked with the Trinity Center through volunteers, Board and adjunct staff. Members benefit from their counseling and support programs. The Trinity Center was a co-developer of our provincial Gemeinshaft program.
              
The Enrichment Center  - This agency provides services to developmentally challenged adults through training, education and support services.
     
Samaritan Ministries – This ministry provides crisis shelter and meals to homeless persons in the community. Home Church volunteers regularly staff the Inn as well the Soup Kitchen.
           
AIDS Care Service   - This agency provides counseling, housing and medication to those who are HIV-positive and those with AIDS. Transitional housing and a day-time center are also provided. Several Home Church members have served, or are serving, on the Board of AIDS Care Service.
      
Prodigals Community  - This ministry provides a residential program for those in recovery from drug and alcohol abuse. Counseling, job assistance, life skills and recovery programs are offered in a structured environment. Numerous Home Church members serve as volunteers or board members.
        
The Shepherd's Center  - The Shepherd’s Center is an interfaith ministry providing services to older adults – active as well as the frail. The Faith In Action Care program provides visitation, minor home repair and transportation services as well as caregiver support training. The ministry also operates two Senior Centers, volunteer and educational opportunities, health promotion and wellness services and insurance counseling for seniors in Forsyth County. Home Church members have served as board members, staff and volunteers.

Bethesda Center  - The Bethesda Center provides a day center for the homeless in the community as well as job counseling and supportive services. A night shelter is provided for women. Home Church members volunteer with this ministry.
    
Imprints (formerly the Association  for the Benefit of Child Development (ABCD)) – This organization provides day care services and early childhood resources to low income families. The Fatherhood Connection program connects children with fathers absent from the home. Home Church members have served as Board members and volunteers.

Sims Center-Happy Hill  - Home Church has been involved with the Sims Center for over 12 years. Support is provided to assist in educational incentive, pool passes and equipment for use at the center which serves hundreds of children in the Happy Hill community. Women’s Fellowship and Men of the Church have both provided support in the past.
                  
Forsyth Jail and Prison Ministry – This ministry provides chaplain services to the Forsyth County Jail and the Prison Unit on Cherry Street. Home Church members have been actively involved over the years and both Home Church and the Province have supported a chaplain position with the ministry. Additional funding is requested for the Legacy Program which seeks to foster a relationship between the incarcerated parent and children in the family.

Yokefellow Prison Ministry – This ministry was added to our outreach support budget in 2002. Their work complements and augments the Forsyth Jail and Prison Ministry with volunteer time and donations. 

Sunnyside Ministry  - This ministry collaborates closely with other crisis agencies in the community to serve low income populations in the southern part of Winston-Salem and surrounding areas. Supported by the Board of Evangelism and Home Missions for administrative expenses, this ministry receives operational and program support from Home Church. Many Home Church members serve as volunteers.
      
CHANGE – Communities Helping All Neighbors Gain Empowerment  - CHANGE is an interfaith, non-partisan, multi-racial and multi-ethnic organization comprised of 35 diverse congregations, neighborhood associations and other community-based groups. CHANGE seeks to provide a representative voice for residents of Forsyth County to positively impact neighborhoods and families. CHANGE represents a network of some 16,000 people who are attempting to make a difference in youth and educational programs, jobs and economic development, health care, housing and local government.
