Summer Fun for Families
This Summer we have 3 events planned for all our families. If you are a family with kids or grandkids that would like to have some fun bonding as a family and sharing fellowship with other families, be sure to mark your calendars for these great days!
Sunday, June 1 - Home Church Day at Laurel Ridge
Visit the NEWS page to see photos from this great day of fellowship!
Sunday, July 20 - Tanglewood Park Picnic Fun
Come out and enjoy the activities that Tanglewood has to offer and play games & participate in activities at the shelter we'll be picnicking in. Fun at Shelter 1 will begin at 4pm, with dinner at 6pm and vespers to follow. This would probably be a great day for a dip in the pool--especially with all the fun kid additions that have been made to it! Free admission to the Park, too!
Sunday, August 17 - Children's Festival
Come and celebrate our children here in Salem Square!
We're bringing a celebration of our past together with a celebration of today's children, our future. August 17th is a special day for children in the Moravian Church--it's the day with the children of the Herrnhut community gathered in their own prayers and worship for the future of their church. We're still planning, but we will worship, be in service, and celebrate this day together!
Don't forget about Summer Sunday School...

Shaffner Family Development Fund Is Seeking Applications for Programming
Background
Mrs. Jane A. Shaffner expressed a profound love for the Moravian faith and traditions, which played an active role in raising her five sons - David, Louis, Fred, Dick and Jim. To honor his late wife and her love of Home Moravian Church, Dr. Louis de S. Shaffner left provisions for the creation of a fund “to support the development of families at Home Church.” After Dr. Shaffner’s passing, the five Shaffner brothers sought to carry out their father’s wishes. Inspired by a resolution passed at the 2006 Synod, which mandated creation of the Moravian Family Spiritual Development Resource, the brothers conceived the Jane A. Shaffner Moravian Family Development Fund. During the summer of 2007, the Shaffners presented their proposal to Home Moravian’s Board of Trustees. The Board graciously accepted the fund and approved the creation of a committee to administer the fund.
Appropriate Use of Funding
The fund document allows for funding of any project that promotes family group activities and strengthens families. By way of example only, here are a couple ways that funds could be used:
- Funding of specific Christian Education programs or projects, where the whole family or two or more members are involved.
- Assist with outreach efforts which may be performed by the family as a unit
We realize that there are many ways to achieve the fund’s objectives and welcome interpretations.
Requests for Funding
If you are interested in requesting funding, please complete the attached form and return it to the church office in advance of the July 15th deadline. Feel free to attach any materials that will help to explain your request and make sure to complete all contact information in case the committee has questions.
After gathering and reviewing requests, the committee expects to meet in early August to make its recommendation – which will be taken to Home Moravian’s Board of Trustees for ratification. Once Board approval is received, applicants will be notified of their status.
Thank you for your interest in developing Home Moravian families. We look forward to considering your requests and honoring the legacy of Mrs. Shaffner. To view and print the application, click here.

2¢ A Meal for 2008

This year's focus for the 2¢ a meal offering is the Cordero de Dios Food Pantry. This food pantry is attempting to serve the largely latino community in the Waughtown neighborhood of Winston-Salem and the southeastern part of Forsyth County. Many residents of this neighborhood who are in need of assistance have very limited ability to be served by some of the other agencies in town. The food pantry distributes food and other necessities from the Second Harvest Food Bank and the direct donations it recieves. This is one of the ministries that has developed out of the new congregation of La Iglesia Moravia Cordero de Dios, Lamb of God Moravian Church, on Peachtree Street.
This year the World Hunger and Global Concerns committee invites you to keep saving those pennies and other loose change to bring by the church for this year's focus. Just label it as 2¢ a meal and drop it off in the church office!
Some families keep a change jar on their kitchen tables to remember this offering each time they gather around for their own meals. We hope you can find space in your home to remember that all people deserve good and nourishing food to sustain them.
Last year we celebrated this offering with a gift of $1200 to the Community Kitchen Program of the Second Harvest Food Bank.
The World Hunger and Global Concerns committee also hopes you will plan to attend a special lunch that will be held on September 28 immediately following the 11am Worship. We will be having a Hunger Awareness Luncheon with Rev. Elizabeth Coleman, the Regional Director of Bread for the World, bringing a message and inviting us to participate in the annual Offering of Letters advocacy project. We will also be recruiting walkers and sponsors for the Forsyth County CROPWalk to be held on October 19 this year. |
