Fulfilling Christ's call to love God, live in community, and serve our neighbor

We Gather Together

Now that the weather has finally started to feel like fall, we’re thinking of those gathering times associated with November. Thanksgiving is the most obvious, of course, but Moravians have a special festival day in November, and Home Church has its own reasons for gathering this month. Let’s take a look at our calendar—abundantly full of opportunities to be with one another as the body of Christ.

Sunday, November 3, at 10 AM, join us for Anniversary Lovefeast, celebrating our 248th year as a congregation. To make it extra special, it will also be a prayer day for older adults and a time to celebrate our members who have reached age 90 and beyond. Some of those members will speak to us in worship, sharing stories and talking about the gifts and challenges of aging.* All members 90 and older who are present in worship that day will receive a special gift, and everyone is invited to linger for a second cup of lovefeast coffee (served in the Lovefeast Serving Room)!

Sunday, November 10 we will mark the Festival of Christ as Chief Elder, a celebration unique to Moravian Christians. We gather in our 10 AM worship for the sacrament of Holy Communion.

Sunday, November 17, is our annual Church Council, in the Sanctuary immediately following worship. Our Church Constitution sets forth this yearly obligation, an opportunity to elect new board members and also to discuss other topics of interest. (Our Constitution specifies: “All matters that relate to the temporal or spiritual welfare of Home Church may be discussed in the Council at the motion of any member or by request of the Board of Elders or the Board of Trustees.”) We encourage all communicant members to gather for this important opportunity to chart the course of our congregation.

Sunday, November 24 is a day with much to be thankful for! It’s the Sunday before Thanksgiving. It’s Reign of Christ Sunday—the end of the church year. (Believe it or not, the new church year begins the following week with the first Sunday of Advent!) And it’s also the day when Home Church gathers with people of faith from many traditions for our annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service. This year’s service will be held at Knollwood Baptist Church, 330 Knollwood Street, at 5:30 PM. We’ll celebrate God’s abundance with members of several different Protestant and Catholic congregations, as well as friends from Temple Emanuel and the Muslim community. It is a tradition at this service for each faith group to contribute an offering of canned food: Home Church is assigned beef stew and/or canned veggies of any kind, so come with your cans because you can!

And then comes Thanksgiving Day—when we pray that all will be gathered with those closest to their hearts, enjoying much peace and expressing deep gratitude for all God’s gifts. We hope that as you offer prayers of thanks around your tables that day, you will know how thankful Home Moravian Church is for each and every member and the gifts all bring to the body of Christ. May you feel God’s blessing richly this month, and may we see you often as we gather together!
