COVID 19 Pandemic Protocols: Candle Tea events will follow current local and state guidelines as issued by the CDC, state of North Carolina and local health officials.
The Candle Tea of Home Moravian Church this year will be in Salem Square. Unlike last year, when it was a drive-by, this year visitors will stroll through the Salem Square to view, hear, smell, and taste the wonders of the Advent season. This will include sugar cake and coffee for sale as well as small handmade Moravian stars, three sizes of handmade beeswax candles (dressed or undressed), and Christingles (kits as well as already made ones.) All prices are $3.00 or less (except larger candles) per item. Cash or Square will be accepted to buy tickets to use at the sites within the Salem Square.
There is no admission, but small items will be for sell while they last. This year, as last, there is no admission fee but donations will be accepted to further the work of the missions of the Home Moravian Church.
A field organ will be playing carols as well as the always beautiful sounding Moravian band. As visitors stroll through the square they can stop to see and to hear narrators talk about Advent traditions from long ago as well as down through the years. They will also introduce visitors to some of the ancestors who graced Salem Square in past years. This is an opportunity which time constraints have not allowed in the past tours within the Single Brothers’ House. The making of the beeswax candles will also be demonstrated with the molds used by Home Moravian church members as they make all the candles used for Christmas LoveFeast celebrations.
The event will be on Saturday, December 4th, from noon until 4 pm. The rain date is December 11th, the following Saturday.
Parking is allowed on some streets in Old Salem. The parking lots of Old Salem will be open, including the visitors parking lot next to the Old Salem Visitors’ Center. The field lot at Academy Street and Old Salem Road will also be available. The streets immediately adjacent to the square will be closed to traffic.
