Scripture Meditation
“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name.” – Psalm 103:1
This verse is one of those beautiful verses that feels like it belongs in a frame in someone’s home. It’s straight to the point and simple. It is uplifting. It doesn’t pose a challenge or draw attention to our shortcomings. I admire that. As someone who enjoys reading between the lines and sometimes thinking a little too hard about what the Bible is telling me, sometimes it is nice to just read a beautiful verse and say “Amen.”
I’m happy to do that with this verse, after pointing out one detail that makes it just a bit more special to me. That middle bit when the author says, “all that is within me,” draws me in. What is within us?
We are beings made to praise God. All that is within us reflects the glory of God. All that is within us is kind of a lot. We hold many things. Sadness, anger, joy, fear, doubt, eagerness, peace, anxiety, love. There are countless pieces of us that can be named and many more that can’t. All those messy bits, the things we are ashamed to show to God, reflect God’s glory. Your sadness is a testament to the comfort of God and the gift God gave you of feeling those deep and beautiful human emotions. Your doubt sings God’s praises because even when we don’t know what is true, God does. The ways we feel that don’t seem holy, are indeed holy. Our smiles, our voices joined in a hymn, the love we feel for a parent. These all reflect God’s glory. So do your tears. Know that all that is within you praises God. All that is within you is a testament to God’s goodness.

Below: The HMC youth got to hang out for a couple of hours at William and Kate’s house. We played volleyball, chess, and jenga and had some amazing burgers! Thank you to the Sanders family for hosting an amazing cookout.
