Making Our Time Matter More
Have you ever thought about how much time we spend in front of a phone, computer or television watching shows, movies, participating in social media or reading the news? Time is a limited commodity but we all have exactly the same amount given to us at any given moment. We can spend it making a difference in the world, wishing we could make a difference, or watching the world carousel.
An organization, Blessed Earth, has some intriguing thoughts and challenges on taking the time to honor the Sabbath as well as caring for God’s Creation. Some ideas for making our time matter involve changes in habits. Here are three ideas to get started:
- Go on a media fast for a meaningful length of time and use the time you gain to pray for guidance about Godly habits.
- Track the amount of time you spend in front of a computer or phone screen and/or television and give the same amount of time to your children, your own faith life or a Volunteer activity that promotes concerns you believe worthy, such as caring for God’s Creation.
- Use some of your saved time to streamline the recycling process in your home or begin contacting junk mail purveyors to stop sending to you. (See December 2012 Environment Stewards Team blog.)
